Australian passport photo size tool

Crop a photo to 35 × 45 mm with chin-to-crown guides and print-ready 6×4 layout, based on the Australian Passport Office size rules.

Read this first. The Australian Passport Office recommends using a professional passport photo provider and says it does not recommend online passport photo services or mobile apps. Passport photos must be printed as good quality colour prints using dye sublimation (not an inkjet printer) on heavy-weight glossy paper of at least 200 gsm. Use this tool to check framing and prepare a file for a photo lab, not to replace their guidance.

The official size rules

According to the Australian Passport Office photo guidelines, passport photos must be 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high, and the height of the face from chin to crown must be 32–36 mm. Photos must be less than 6 months old and have a plain white or light grey background that contrasts with your face, with uniform lighting and no shadows, reflections or retouching.

How the tool works

  1. Choose a front-facing photo taken against a plain light background.
  2. Use the zoom and position sliders so the top of the head touches the red dashed line and the chin sits inside the green band. That keeps the face between 32 and 36 mm on a 45 mm photo.
  3. Download a single 35 × 45 mm image at 600 dpi, or a 6 × 4 inch (10 × 15 cm) sheet with four copies.
  4. Print at actual size (100%, no "fit to page") and measure with a ruler.

Other rules to check

The guidelines also say you must face the camera straight on with eyes open and a neutral expression (children under 3 may have their mouth open), no glasses unless you can't remove them for medical reasons, no hair over the edges of your face, and plain religious head coverings only.
